University of Kentucky Endourology Fellowship
Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship
Division of Urology
University of Kentucky, Lexington
Description of Program
This is a two year fellowship approved by the Endourological Society matching
program to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art training in all aspects of
minimally invasive urology. The main focus of this training will be advanced
laparoscopy including robotic assisted surgery, and management of complex stone
disease. The clinical training of the fellow however shall be tailored to the
individual's post-fellowship career goals. The fellowship will be at the UK
Chandler Medical Center, Markey Cancer Center and the adjoining VA Hospital.
The fellow will function as a junior attending urologist (instructor) with
clinical, research, teaching and administrative responsibilities. He/she
will supervise residents in the operating room and the urology clinic. The
fellow's time will be equally distributed between clinical work and research
during both years. The fellow's annual salary and benefits are consistent with a
clinical instructor.
Clinical
The University of Kentucky urology division is a tertiary referral center with a
large mix of complex cancer and stone patients. The variety of advanced laparoscopic
surgery exposes the fellow to all aspects of the urologic laparoscopic surgery
including laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, robot assisted prostatectomy,
partial nephrectomy and bladder surgery with the da Vinci surgical system, single port
laparoscopy, PCNL's and other routine renal surgeries including cyroablation. The fellow
will work primarily with Dr. Ramakrishna Venkatesh and Dr. Stephen Strup, but will be
an integral part of the Urology Division, working with other faculty during laparoscopic
and endourologic procedures. The on-call is shared with other full-time faculty
members. With only two residents for 7 adult faculty members at the University
Hospital, there is adequate surgical volume for the residents and the fellow.
Education
The state-of-the-art advanced laparoscopic dedicated training facility (MIS lab) is
available with live hook up to the operative rooms. The facility is used for training
residents, medical students and post-graduate students. The facility is also used
during training courses for community urologists, advanced laparoscopy workshops,
and during multidisciplinary minimally invasive surgery meetings. The fellow is
closely involved with the residents and medical students education including giving
grand round talks on minimally invasive urology topics.
Research
A fully equipped translational animal research laboratory is available at the UK Medical
Center. The fellow is encouraged to do clinical and laboratory research including the
topics of his/her interest. The fellow is expected to perform one animal translational
research study during the fellowship for submission to endourology society essay
contest. The animal facility includes laparoscopic surgical devices, C-arm fluoroscopy,
and other minimally invasive research tools. Several clinical studies are presently in
progress. There are comprehensive laparoscopic and robotic data bases for
prostatectomies, renal surgery and stone disease. Fellow is encouraged to publish and
present his/her work in the national and international meetings.
Application Process
Applicants must complete an accredited urology residency in the US before joining the
fellowship. This fellowship participates in the Endourological Society fellowship match
program. Details and application forms are available at http://www.endourology.org/fellowship/
